What is the difference between an Architect and a Chartered Architectural Technologist ?
Definition of a Chartered Architectural Technologist MCIAT:
Chartered Architectural Technologists provide architectural design services and solutions. They are specialists in the science of architecture, building design and construction and form the link between concept and construction. They negotiate the construction project and manage the process from conception through to completion. Chartered Architectural Technologists (MCIAT) may practice on their own account or with fellow Chartered Architectural Technologists, architects, engineers, surveyors and other professionals within the construction industry. As professionals adhering to a Code of Conduct, they are required to obtain and maintain mandatory Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) if providing services directly to clients.
Definition of an architect by RIBA:
Architectural education and training focuses on the integration and synthesis of all aspects of design and construction in response to a client's brief, both for individual buildings, groups of buildings and spaces in between. A person described as an architect must, by law be registered with the Architect's Registration Board.

Daren Thomas - (MCIAT)
Daren finished his education in Cornwall after moving from Birmingham in 1980. With a natural ability to produce technical drawings, Daren started his working career at Charles Dart & Associates, and worked under the instruction of Andrew Dart for 3 years where he gained his ONC in Building Studies before the office closed.
This gave Daren an opportunity to expand his knowledge of the construction industry, and he gained experience in site setting out and surveying where he travelled throughout Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. Returning back to an office position with Michael Beardsall Associates, (now MBA Consulting, Truro) Daren gained valuable knowledge in structural engineering and civil engineering. This also gave him the opportunity to complete his HNC in Building Studies in 1995.
In 1996 A-Tec Design was formed and Daren went onto become a Chartered Architectural Technologist in 2004. As well as running the practice, with a keen interest in sustainable design Daren keeps abreast of new or old techniques to improve his knowledge of how to enhance the construction process and to improve the energy performance of the buildings for his clients.
Lee Crease - (MCIAT)
Lee started his career in architecture working at GMW Partnership in London. After a number of years he moved on to work with Stephen Limbrick Associates and The Miller Partnership. During this period he completed his ONC & HNC in Building Studies. The highlight of his time in London was being extensively involved in the construction of Millwall Football Stadium. With a love for surfing and the nightlife that accompanied it, Lee moved to Cornwall in 1995 while maintaining a working relationship with Stephen Limbrick Associates.
In September 2000, Lee joined A-Tec Design and after 5 years of dedication to the business he became an Associate in Sept. 2005. With an opportunity to work on all size of projects Lee has expanded his knowledge of the construction process. His 3D design ability enables clearer presentation of clients schemes to the local community and planning officers.
Lee Crease became a Chartered Architectural Technologist in 2008 and has extended his role within A-Tec Design, running projects and monitoring works on site.
